Meeting Notes

2/10/03 meeting at Amherst College (Barker Room)

Present: C. Loring, R. Fonfa , S. Willen Brown, J. Schafer, M. Hanley, J. Jourdain

We discussed how next to proceed regarding open linking, since there is widespread support for its implementation as soon as practical. The Librarians' Council has not heard back from the Five College Directors (i.e. Presidents/Chancellor) yet regarding funding, but the Council is hopeful for positive information from the next Directors meeting.

We agreed that we should take responsibility (unless the Librarians' Council decides to make another group responsible) for pursuing open linking and federated searching together (since they come bundled by the vendors - even if we don't necessarily purchase them bundled). While we wait for word on funding, Marilyn will contact likely sources of sample documents for contacting vendors. It is unclear whether UMass requires an RFB or RFI to pursue acquisition of open linking technology; Jay will find out which document is required. Once we have the samples and know what kind of document to draft, we'll start work on drafting the appropriate document on behalf of Five Colleges. DEDCC will work on the RFB/RFI, arranging vendor demos, and preparing a recommendation to the Librarians Council for purchase of preferred products. (All pending positive outcome of the request for funding.)

Joined by Margaret Groesbeck (AC), Linda Matson (UM) and Anne C. Moore (UM), we reviewed some of the options we currently have available to us with My Millennium in III. We agreed to implement some of the simpler ones such as the synonyms list as soon as possible, while further investigating others for implementation soon.

Jan - check on "My Millennium" with Linda -- done
Jan - investigate embedding links in electronic notices generated by III - done - easy to implement locally at each institution
