2/24/03 PM meeting at Five Colleges
Present: S. Willen Brown, R. Fonfa , C. Loring, J. Schafer, M. Hanley, J. Jourdain
We discussed the implementation status of the III "My Millennium" features Linda Matson described at our 2/10 meeting. Some features can be implemented at no cost; RIO will discuss the desirability of their implementation and reply directly to Linda about them. We continued to agree that implementation of any additional features that cost money will be tabled at this time. The keywords "synonyms list" has been implemented in both catalogs already. Also, it is easy to add URLs to overdue and other notices so that patrons receiving those notices electronically can easily link to appropriate pages/forms for renewing their materials themselves.
The Cataloging Committee is discussing the possibility of offering "catalog enrichment" features in both catalogs. These features could include TOCs, images of book jackets, links to reviews, etc. Marilyn will meet with some of the Cataloging people to get more details on what features they'd like to implement and how. The possibility of seeing sample "enriched" records in the catalogs as a demo of what might be implemented was suggested.
We haven't had a response yet from the FCLC regarding possible funding for open linking. In an effort to maintain a reasonable timeline for September implementation for at least some of the Five College members, we'll continue at present as though the project is funded. We'll start to develop an RFB (the document UMass requires) to likely vendors which includes both Open Linking and Federated Searching, making it clear in the RFB that not all technologies may be adopted by any of the FC members, and that the adopted technologies may not even be implemented simultaneously by all the members.
Action Items - Old
Jan - investigate embedding links in electronic notices generated by III - done - easy to implement locally at each institution - done Jay - check on which is appropriate: RFI or RFB -- done
Action Items - New
Marilyn, Jay, & Raven - get sample requirements documents for open linking/federated searching (has some, getting more) Stephanie & Jan - start drafting open linking & federated searching requirements list for RFB Raven - explore possible open linking/federated searching vendor list to make sure we don't miss any likely possibilities
Next meeting: Monday, March 10, 2 PM, Five Colleges
Agenda: update on funding from Directors, proceeding with open linking/federated searching RFB, ideas
