Meeting Notes

03/10/03 2PM meeting at Five Colleges
Present: C. Loring, S. Willen Brown, S. Berger, J. Schafer, R. Fonfa , M. Hanley, J. Jourdain
We conducted our quarterly (slightly late) evaluation of our progress to date. The success of the two January programs co-sponsored with RIO was noted as an example of fulfilling our charge to help educate our peers. Our ability to work together, and accomplish things, in somewhat ambiguous territory was also noted.
Raven asked that any input we’d like to offer for the May session RIO is sponsoring on live reference be directed through her.

We reviewed some of the recently implemented changes to the III catalogs. We’ll prepare a “press release” about them from distribution in the various libraries.

We tabled discussion of catalog enrichment via Syndetics (or other sources) for the time being. Since the idea is a topic of discussion among the Cataloging Committee still, we recommended that Cataloging reach some consensus about it and then discuss it with RIO, before it is on the DEDCC agenda again.

Sika reported briefly on two options for using Google to implement simultaneous searching across the five library websites. She’s continuing to further investigate those options.
Chris reported that there is no update from the FCLC regarding possible funding of OpenLinking in the coming fiscal year. We agreed that lack of solid funding should not deter us from preparation of relevant procurement documents.

We spent the second half of the meeting discussing how to proceed with preparation of an RFB (UMass’ required document) for OpenLinking. We scheduled an additional working meeting to hash out the RFB for next Wednesday (03/1/9/03) at 1PM at Five Colleges.
Action Items - Old
Marilyn, Jay, & Raven - get sample requirements documents for open linking/federated searching (has some, getting more) – done
Stephanie & Jan - start drafting open linking & federated searching requirements list for RFB -- done
Raven - explore possible open linking/federated searching vendor list to make sure we don't miss any likely possibilities -- done
