DEDCC 05/29/03 meeting at Five Colleges—notes
Present: S. Berger, M. Billings, C. Loring, S. Willen Brown, J. Jourdain
C. Loring updated the committee on the status of FCLC’s discussions about a future ILS. The topic is on FCLC’s agenda for their July meeting; more information will be forthcoming after that meeting.
C. Loring reported there is some Five College interest in DSpace, an institutional repository for electronic materials. Several people from Five Colleges, both library and IT, attended a NERCOMP meeting on DSpace at MIT on April 30. Pat Albanese, MHC, plans to convene a meeting of those people to discuss how DSpace might be implemented by Five Colleges.
M. Billings reported on a CNI initiative to encourage the development of institutional and consortial electronic repositories and collaborative learning spaces. CNI wants to visit each area of the country to begin discussion of these primary initiatives with library and information technology professionals. It might be worthwhile for Five Colleges to host an event in this region where Clifford Lynch and/or Joan Lippincott of CNI could present these initiatives. We agreed that it’s worth contacting CNI to express an interest in their idea.

We agreed to start planning a workshop on XML to be held during late July. The workshop is intended for all Five College librarians and will include an overview of what XML is, what kinds of things XML can do, and how XML is being used now in the Five College Libraries. We hope to have a recommended speaker from the SUNY system as well as a local presenter. More details will follow soon.
We briefly discussed the recent meeting about the virtual reference projects at Smith, UMass, and Williams. DEDCC is very interested in what RIO may want to do regarding additional virtual reference projects among the Five Colleges, perhaps including Williams as well.
M. Billings updated the group on the status of the updated www.fivecolleges.edu web site and how information about the various Library committees might be included in the site.
Thanks to the good news from the FCLC and the Five College Directors regarding their funding of Ex Libris’ SFX and MetaLib over the next three years, we began drafting letters to Ex Libris informing them of their selection. We also started drafting letters to the other RFB respondents thanking them for their participation in the process, including their demos, and informing them that their products were not selected.
