DEDCC 06/30/03 meeting at Five Colleges — notes

Present: M. Billings, J. Schafer, S. Berger, S. Willen Brown, J. Boisselle, J. Jourdain

We decided to conduct our quarterly review of our activities at our next meeting, July 14. We’ll also begin a preliminary discussion of our annual report for the past year at that meeting.

We discussed the upcoming SFX training scheduled for July 21-22 at Smith. More details on the training will be forthcoming from the Five College SFX implementation group.

We reviewed several items from our “ideas/future-pending” list, specifically:

Information Commons – There is a growing trend toward creating both physical and virtual “information commons” on campuses. Mount Holyoke is actively doing so while Smith and UMass may explore the possibilities. An upcoming NERCOMP session will focus on the concept. We agreed that we want to keep informed on local related activities as well as on the overall trend.

Although virtual reference is not a high priority for RIO now due to other more urgent activities, DEDCC wants to keep track of what products develop and how they’re being used elsewhere, in case a Five College application becomes desirable.

P. Albanese convened a meeting of Five College attendees to the recent NERCOMP session on DSpace. A couple of campuses have potential uses for DSpace in mind, but it’s not clear if a Five College application of the technology makes sense yet.

Five Colleges is making progress on their website rebuilding project. The current plans include space and access for the various library committees to maintain their own relevant information within the site.

We confirmed that the XML workshop we were proposing has been postponed until January 2004.

We spent most of the meeting discussing Ex Libris-related projects. The contract was signed by Five Colleges on Friday, June 27 and we expected that Ex Libris would finalize it on Tuesday, July 1. We hope that we’ll be given access to the implementation questionnaires and other documentation shortly after Ex Libris finalizes the contract, hopefully within the next week. TDNet has agreed to supply data for each institution as of June 30, and we expect to receive that data soon. We agreed that TDNet’s ChangeNotes product (a weekly listing of title and holdings changes) may be worth looking at in the future. Once we receive our data from TDNet, each institution will review and update the data as appropriate to their needs. RIO has been working on interface issues; the intent is for the five distinct versions of the interface be similar enough to facilitate cross-campus use, without requiring all the institutions to adopt identical language and styles.
