Meeting Notes

DEDCC 08/21/03 meeting at Five Colleges — notes
Present: J. Schafer, S. Berger, C. Loring, S. Willen Brown, J. Boisselle, J. Jourdain
Stephanie reported that our annual report has been submitted to the Librarians Council.
In light of the ongoing ILS selection process, DEDCC is scaling back its activities for the coming year and plans to meet monthly, rather than more frequently as it has to date. We did not set a meeting schedule for the entire semester because not all members of the committee were present, but will do so at our next meeting, Sept 12, 10:30 at Five Colleges.
Sika and Jan updated the group on the progress of the ILS Selection Committee to date. More information on that will be forthcoming from the ILS Committee soon.
We had a lengthy discussion about the status of SFX implementation to date. So far, everything seems to be going well. While some libraries are cooperating quite a bit with each other to share the workload, we agreed that additional cooperation would benefit all. Mount Holyoke has already gone “live” with SFX, while Amherst and Hampshire are in the process of activating sources and are partially “live” now also. The exact status of Smith and UMass is unknown. Julie reported that Mount Holyoke’s “soft launch” approach has many positive aspects and it appears that at least some of the other libraries will follow a similar tack.
We began detailing some plans for the XML workshop we hope to present for all Five College librarians during the Fall. We expect the session to be approximately 3 hours. The tentative date is one of the following, depending on the availability of space (either Dwight 101 at Mount Holyoke or ASH Auditorium at Hampshire): Oct 30, Nov 13, or Nov 20. Stephanie and Julie will ask someone from the Archives Committee to work with them to plan the session.
The Five College website revision is progressing; the new version of the site has been live for several weeks. Sika forwarded a “library contacts” summary table to Five Colleges for inclusion in the site. More news on library committee space on the site will be forwarded as it becomes available.
We reviewed our “future/pending” list of topics to determine the ongoing status of each item. Some items will be referred to other library committees for their comments on them while other items will remain in a review category to remind us to regularly check on their status.
