DEDCC 04/30/04 meeting at Five Colleges - notes

Present: S. Brown, S. Berger, C. Loring, J. Ewing, L. Button, J. Jourdain

1. We agreed to individually review our ground rules prior to our next meeting so that we can review them together when we meet again.

2. We agreed to conduct an internal review of our activities at our next meeting.

3. We scheduled the following upcoming meetings:

Thursday June 10 9-10:30AM Smith
Thursday July 1 9-10:30AM Five Colleges*
Thursday July 6 9-10:30AM Five Colleges*
Thursday July 29 9-10:30AM Five Colleges
Thursday August 19 9-10:30AM Smith
*We will meet on Thurs July 1 only if the MetaLib training is three days instead of two.

4. The MetaLib training will be conducted July 6-8 on version 3 of the software. It will be held at Amherst.

5. We discussed the possibility of a series of brown bag lunches for all Five College library staff members, starting during the summer, to review a variety of topics. A formal proposal about the series will be sent to the FCLC within the next couple of weeks.

6. We each described the various methods used on each campus to provide Five College students not local to the campus with access to campus-restricted resources. Our point in reviewing the methods was to satisfy our own curiosity about how non-local students are granted access for materials when they are enrolled in a course on their non-home campus. we reviewed charge for printing and copier vendors / policies used at each campus, and that both sets of info could be part of the Five College website "handy chart for library users", if/when that goes up.

7. Stephanie mentioned that Apple is now offering an institutional version of iTunes. Hampshire and Amherst might experiment with it this summer as a means of providing streaming access to audio files for music and language electronic reserves.

8. ArtSTOR looks very promising, based on a demo given at Smith on April 16. There is considerable interest within Five Colleges for increased access to image resources. DEDCC hopes that MetaLib and a new ILS will eventually make such access easier.
