Meeting Notes

DEDCC 07/01/04 meeting at Smith College - notes

Present: S. Brown, M. Billings, C. Loring, L. Button, J. Jourdain

1. The MetaLib training scheduled for July 6-8 is set.

2. Chris reported that the ILS Negotiating Committee and Ex Libris have been exchanging information with the goal of signing a contract on/about September 1.

3. A brown bag lunch for all interested library staff members will be held Tuesday, July 20, 12-2PM, Dwight 101, Mount Holyoke. The topic of discussion is the SMUG (SFX/MetaLib Users Group) meeting June 17-18 and particularly Ex Libris’ MARCIt! service. Stay tuned for additional information. At SMUG, Ex Libris announced that the new version of SFX will probably be installed for us in October. Information about the new version will be presented at the brown bag.

4. We discussed the reported III circ problem regarding the inability of patrons to self-renew their overdue materials in the web catalog. DEDCC recommends that any suggested software upgrades not be installed in early September, just before the semester starts.

5. We lsited a few new ideas that we might want to consider for further investigation in coming months. They are:

Browsability of e-books from within the catalog (something like the Amazon “look inside this book” model)
Development of a Five Colleges browser toolbar (something like Google’s) for quick library reference
Facilitation of blogging
