DEDCC 09/10/04 meeting at Five Colleges - notes

Present: S. Brown, J. Ewing, L. Button, C. Loring, S. Berger, M. Billings, J. Jourdain

1. We discussed possible courses of action for encouraging Ex Libris to have a more positive response to our MetaLib contact’s provision that the software work on Macs. Each member of the committee was asked to send Stephanie information on the following: approximate % of PC vs. Mac users on their campus, and % of PCs vs. Macs accessing each library’s website. Stephanie will inquire on the MetaLib listserv regarding other customers’ experiences with Macs.

2. Marilyn asked us to think of ways to encourage the other library committees to contribute and maintain information on the Five Colleges website. (This topic was tabled due to lack of time.)

3. Planning for the brown bag lunch on Oct 21 at Smith is going well. The topic is personalization vs. privacy rights. Susan Edwards, AC, has already agreed to be a discussion leader; we are waiting for another leader, from UM, to be identified. We very tentatively scheduled additional brown-bags on the following topics: Library Dynamics, Dec ’04 (Stephanie will talk with Collection Management to see if they want to “co-sponsor”); blogging/RSS, Feb ’05?; FRBR, May ‘05? Janet will check with RIO to see if they are planning any events for Jan ’05, to ensure that scheduling or topics don’t conflict.

4. We discussed Marilyn’s list of III Millennium Silver enhancements from this summer’s upgrade. DEDCC had asked for a list of “easy to implement” features that would quickly improve the system’s service. Marilyn said she is going to visit with the various functional committees to explain the enhancements and ask which should be turned on.

5. Sika pointed out that there is enthusiasm for implementing some of Ex Libris’ products that are not directly related to ALEPH prior to the full ALEPH implementation. It’s likely that the purchase of these optional products will be part of the eventual Ex Libris contact, but there’s no way at present to schedule which products for implementation when. Sika volunteered to draft a memo to the various functional committees describing the optional products and asking that the committees prioritize the implementation of those products, particularly in relation to overall ALEPH implementation.

Next Meeting: Friday, October 1, 9AM, Five Colleges
