DEDCC 10/22/04 meeting at Five Colleges - notes

Present: J. Ewing, S. Berger, L. Button, M. Billings, S. Brown, C. Loring, J. Jourdain

1. We discussed the 10/21/04 brown bag lunch session on personalization v. privacy held at Smith. Although the turnout was not as high as hoped, those attending had a very lively discussion. There seemed to be broad consensus that the libraries should be play a role in helping our patrons, particularly our students, become more aware of how their personal information may be collected and used in the online information environment. Stephanie and Sika will compile their notes from the brown bag. Based on those notes, we hope to prepare a summary of comments for the FCLC regarding the need for consistent statements on all the campuses to raise patrons’ awareness of privacy issues.

2. We set a date for the next brown bag lunch, on consortial collection statistics, for Thursday, December 16. The Collection Management Committee is enthusiastic about the session which we hope will feature a presentation by Library Dynamics of their collection analysis tools. The brown bag will be at Amherst; more information will be announced closer to the date.

3. The brown bag on blogging we’re tentatively planning for February 2005 at Hampshire may also include some information about other open source communication and collaboration tools.

4. J. Ewing reported on LITA, which she recently attended. While several vendors have now announced various ERM (electronic resource management) products, none of them appear to be far enough along to warrant particular attention at this time.

5. The committee was asked to review all the Q&A between Five Colleges and Ex Libris regarding ALEPH. Any red flags should be forwarded to S. Brown by November 12.

6. We had a lengthy discussion about the pros and cons of a more universal Five Colleges Libraries listserv, open to everyone in all the libraries. While originally thinking that it might be a useful way to consolidate the existing lists and broaden the topical coverage as well as distribution, we eventually concluded that if a new list is created, it should be more general than the existing lists and could be used for communications which are currently somewhat haphazard.

7. M. Billings provided an update on the status of III Millennium Silver enhancements, on track for implementation by November 1. M. Billings obtain documentation on the “my reading history” feature to confirm how widely records are kept in the system before a final decision about turning the feature on is made. Since there may be privacy implications to this feature, we want to ensure the best understanding of it before adopting it. M. Billings is also preparing a document to go to all committees/all libraries explaining the latest system enhancements for November 1.

Next meeting: Friday, November 12, 9AM, Five Colleges
