DEDCC 11/12/04 meeting at Five Colleges - notes

Present: S. Berger, C. Loring, M. Billings, S. Brown, L. Button, J. Jourdain

1. The FCLC asked DEDCC to draft a statement regarding what level of access non-affiliated users should have to each institution’s network in order to use universally-licensed library resources. As a first step, we all agreed to post our own local network access information on the blog S. Brown has started at blogspot.com.

2. After some initial comments, we agreed that we will spend part of our December meeting discussing the future role of DEDCC and the directions in which we might move.

3. S. Brown and S. Berger compiled their notes from the Privacy v. Personalization brown bag on October 21. They will synthesize those notes further for FCLC, combining them with links to privacy statements posted at other institutions, and suggest that it might be useful for each of the Five Colleges, individually or collectively, to have privacy statements.

4. L. Button is in the process of contacting the Library Dynamics people to finalize the December 16 on collection assessment being co-hosted by the Collection Management Committee. More details on this event will follow soon.

5. M. Billings provided a quick update on the recent III Millennium Silver enhancements. All of those of interest to the Circulation Committee have already been implemented; M. Billings is waiting for more information from III before finalizing a couple of remaining features of interest to RIO.

6. We tabled any discussion of Ex Libris product watch to our next meeting, when we’ll consider how best to keep abreast of developments with digital object management (DOM) and electronic resource management (ERM) systems.

7. Having voted via anonymous emails earlier in the week, we agreed on the two nominees from DEDCC to the FCLC for service on the ALEPH Implementation Committee. We also agreed to suggest another non-DEDCC person whose work and abilities we respect and believe valuable to the project.

8. After some clarification of a couple of items in the compiled Ex Libris Q&A, we agreed that we see no “red flags” in any of the documentation, and will so report that to J. Jourdain.

9. We continued our discussion of the pros and cons of a Five Colleges librarians listserv. While we all acknowledge the value of such a communication vehicle, some members are skeptical that it will be utilized as fully as possible. All agreed, however, that it’s worth trying, so S. Brown will finalized a proposal to the FCLC regarding the list. J. Jourdain will ask Donna Baron, Five Colleges, if such a list can be hosted by Five Colleges, Inc.

Next meeting: Friday, December 3, 9AM, Five Colleges
