DEDCC 12/03/04 meeting at Five Colleges - notes
Present: S. Brown, J. Ewing, S. Berger, M. Billings, L. Button, J. Jourdain
1. We reviewed the plans for the December 16 Brown Bag on collection analysis tools. It will be at 12 noon in the Barker Room, Frost Library, Amherst College. Leslie Button confirmed that a representative from Library Dynamics will make a presentation about their services and products.
2. Although there was some concern that our proposed schedule for additional Brown Bag sessions might be too ambitious, we agreed that it was fine and would proceed as planned for now. Thus, we set a tentative date of February 25 to cover a range of topics including blogs, RSS, and RFID. The plan is to describe what each is, give some examples of how it’s being used, and suggest some ways it might be used in the Five Colleges.
3. We spent the bulk of the meeting reviewing the policies on each campus for access to wireless networking, public workstations, and online library resources. The intent and result of the discussion was a preliminary draft policy statement regarding the ideal level of access the libraries would like their users to have to networked library resources. Stephanie Brown will polish the draft for email review by the committee before it is finalized and sent to the FCLC (by their December 15 meeting, we hope).
4. Marilyn Billings reported that III has not yet responded regarding the problem with the partners search between the two library catalogs. She also noted that most of the desired Millennium Silver options have been activated. The reading history option has not yet been activated because III has yet to supply documentation about it.
5. We agreed to remind all committees that the Five Colleges website is available for posting their meeting notes and other information.
6. We touched briefly on DEDCC concerns but tabled an in-depth discussion of our mission. Many of the areas of interest we've identified deal with issues of access and the preservation of digital materials.
Next meeting: Friday, January 7, 9AM, Five Colleges (bring calendars so we can schedule spring semester meetings)
