DEDCC 01/07/05 meeting at Five Colleges - notes

Present: S. Brown, J. Ewing, L. Button, C. Loring, S. Berger, J. Jourdain

S. Berger will finalize a memo to the FCLC summarizing the discussion at the recent privacy/personalization brown bag; S. Brown will forward the memo to the FCLC once it’s finalized.

We scheduled our next meeting (01/28/05, 9AM) but didn’t schedule the rest of the semester, pending local reference desk schedules, etc. for the spring.

We discussed our impressions of Library Dynamics’ collection assessment capabilities as demonstrated at Dec 16 brown bag. All agreed that while generally a very appealing concept, the software is not yet as fully-functional as we’d like to see. From DEDCC’s viewpoint, it’s certainly worth watching over the next couple of years to see how the software is developed. Meanwhile, L. Button will contact the Collection Management Committee and ask that CMC consolidate their comments in a memo to the FCLC.

We finalized some plans for our Feb 25 brown bag at HC. The session will be on “hot technologies,” and will include brief overviews/demonstrations of library applications for several topics frequently mentioned these days. Topics to be included are: blogs, RSS, RFID and ContentDM.

We briefly discussed access to the various library committee pages on the Five Colleges website. The URL that some members had doesn’t appear to work and we’re waiting for the correct URL from M. Billings. J. Jourdain offered to maintain DEDCC’s web space during M. Billings’ sabbatical.

C. Loring noted that purchase of Verde, the electronic resource management (aka ERM) package from Ex Libris, is part of the recently signed ALEPH contract.

The remainder of the meeting was spent discussing topics that we want to continue to monitor. Digital Object Management (aka DOM) is of prime importance, particularly as it is so tightly interrelated with digital image management. SC has a collection of international studies materials that might be more widely used its access was improved; C. Loring asked that DEDCC help consider options for it. HC is interested in electronic portfolios, as well. All agreed that Google’s relationship with libraries, GoogleScholar and electronic plagiarism are all topics worth careful monitoring and discussion in the future.

Next meeting: Friday, January 28, 9AM, Neilson Library, Smith College
