01/19/2006 Minutes December 19, 2005 Five College Libraries, Research, Information and Outreach Committee Present: Bryan Goodwin (recorder), Margaret Groesbeck, Beth Lang, Barbara Polowy, Bonnie Vigeland, Jan Jourdain (guest) Absent: Sherre Harrington Meetings Committee members discussed the vocabulary and functions of the wireframes produced by Slate Roof for the new library catalog. The following are RIO’s recommended revisions to take back to Slate Roof. Many of the proposed changes will need to be tested in usability studies before a final decision is made. Home/Basic Search Screen First Line: Change “My List” to “My Folder” and “Display Options” to “Preferences” Second Line: Change “All” to “All Five.” Possibly delete “More…” RIO also recommends here and perhaps throughout that after clicking on an entry, the text becomes bolded and in color. Third Line: Revise terms and change order to read: “Basic Search, Advanced Search, [Journal Title Search], Reserves, New Titles, Recent Searches, Results” RIO discussed also the possibility of dropping Journal Title Search from this line. Fourth Line: Move “Basic Search” up a line to close up some of the white space . Fifth Line: Revise options under “Search type:” RIO recommends usability testing to determine the proper order. Sixth Line: Drop “More” at the end of “Library Home Pages:…” Advanced Search Screen Lines 1,2,3: Revise to mirror the Basic Search Screen. Move the Limit Search box to be below Advanced Search and revise as follows: “Limit Advanced Search to: Remove the “Collection” drop-down option and consolidate all locations/collections with the “Location” option. The drop down would be ordered by library and then branch libraries/collections.
Lines 1,2,3: Revise to mirror the Basic Search Screen. Line 4: Create a navigation aid (Previous Page / Next Page) if there are many results. Line 5: Change to only say “SEARCH = [search terms] Line 7: Revise order to read: Line8: Revise “Click for Full Record” to “Full Record” or “Details” RIO recommends usability testing before a decision is made. Revise “Click for Availability” to “Availability”
Record View Screen RIO will need to review the terminology identifying elements in the bibliographic record. A recommendation was made to hot link the Call Number field so that patrons can browse by call numbers. RIO needs more information on what actually appears in the “Availability Location” box before making recommendations. Delete the last line of links “Library Home Pages:…” | |
