Five College Libraries
Research, Information and Outreach Committee (RIO)

Present: Bryan Goodwin, Margaret Groesbeck, Beth Lang (recorder), Barbara Polowy, Bonnie Vigeland.

Absent: Sherre Harrington

The sole agenda topic was a discussion of design and vocabulary of the revised wireframes for the new Aleph library catalog. These revised wireframes were produced by Slate Roof in late December, and they incorporated RIO’s suggestions from the initial wireframes.

RIO’s suggested changes for the revised wireframes are as follows:

Home/Basic Search

Line starting with You are searching: Remove: / More

Line starting with Search: Change order to following:
Basic | Advanced | Reserves | New Titles | Journal Locator | More

Note: The above changes should apply to all 4 pages of wireframes.

Remove the word Search: from inside the left box and the words Search for: that are on top of the search box.

Add the words: Search for: on top of the left box

Replace the list that is inside of the left box with the following:

Words anywhere

Title begins with
Title words
Journal Title
-----
Author (last name first)
Author words
-----
Subject begins with
Subject words
-----
Call number begins with

Advanced Search

Terms in the 3 greyed boxes should all be plural:
Title words `Author words Words anywhere

The first two grey boxes should have the 3 Boolian options: And, Not, Or
The third grey box should have only 2 options: And, Not

The Search button should be moved higher up on the page, probably to the right of the 3 search boxes. Graphic designer should arrange all of the boxes, including the long blue box so the page looks symmetrical.

Results List

Move the upper “Jump to” , Previous Page and Next page boxes so they are above the long gray box.

Underline library names to indicate that they are live links, ie. Amherst (2/1)

Remove all of the # symbols from the page.

Changes within the grey box:
Remove the text: For resort; click on column heading.
Over the Title column, text should read: For full record, click title
Over the Library (Owned/Out) column, text should read: For call number, click library name

To the left of the heading, Author, insert the words: Sort options:

Record View

Put the fields seen in the Record view in the same order and use the same terminology as in Innopac.

Author, title, publisher, edition, description, note, subject….

Add LC Marc view button to page

[Question for Jan J. - Is there a way to run a call number browse, without going back to the Basic search screen and choosing the “Call number begins with” option? Could the call number on the holdings page be a live link to a call number browse, similar to the call no. browse we have with Innopac?]

These suggestions from RIO will be handed over to Slate Roof at the next meeting of the Aleph OPAC Design Committee, scheduled for Friday, January 27, at Amherst College Library.

RIO meetings scheduled for spring semester will all be held on Mondays, starting at 9:00am at Hampshire College Library. Dates are:
