Five College Libraries
Research, Instruction and Outreach Committee (RIO)
Minutes of the June 4, 2007 Meeting

Present: Bonnie Vigeland (chair), Bryan Goodwin, Margaret Groesbeck, Beth Lang (recorder), Barbara Polowy
Absent: Sherre Harrington

Meetings:

Minutes of the May 21, 2007 meeting were approved without changes.

The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 9 at 8:30am at Hampshire College.

Suggestions were made that RIO host a couple of gatherings for our 5-Colleges colleagues over the next months:

In the early fall (date to be determined), RIO would like to have a traditional get-together and information-sharing session for all interested 5-Colleges public service librarians. Margaret Groesbeck will investigate the use of Alumni House at AC as the site, and report back to the group.

RIO has in the past, hosted orientation sessions for our new colleagues from all of the 5-Colleges. It has been several years since the last orientation, so will consider scheduling a session, probably in January, 2008.

Completed Project:

The finalized List of OPAC Problems, from RIO Committee was submitted to Sherre Harrington for her to pass on to FCLC, as of May 31.

Summer Projects:

It will be difficult to set up a firm schedule of RIO summer projects, until we receive a response from FCLC and Ex Libris regarding the List of OPAC Problems. RIO should have a clear understanding as to what changes may be made in the OPAC before further user testing can occur.

ALEPH OPAC projects may include: work on language in “My account” pages, SDI, Help screens and others. RIO is also awaiting a decision on Catalog Enrichment recommendations submitted to FCLC by DEDCC group.

New Titles: Per recommendation from the 5-Colleges Cataloging Committee, work on setting up the New Titles list functionality in OPAC has been suspended, and use of SDI functionality is being encouraged as a substitute. RIO members hope this is not the final word on the New Titles list, and will further investigate this topic.
