Next Meeting Dates
July 14, & August 11 (both are Mondays, at 9:00am, at Hampshire College Library.)
Investigation of NextGen Catalog User Interface
DEDCC was tasked by FCLC to explore WorldCat Local and AquaBrowser User interfaces and report back to FCLC. Sherre explained that this is a preliminary investigation only, and FCLC does not have a timeframe in mind yet to make a formal recommendation about the project. RIO members expressed a strong desire to be more involved if and when the NextGen interface project moves forward. In the meantime, RIO members have attended the AquaBrowser vendor demonstration and plan to attend the upcoming WorldCat Local vendor demonstration. Bryan will compile RIO feedback rating the two systems about how well they address Aleph OPAC deficiencies raised in the November, 2007, Five Colleges Library Catalog Usability Testing results, and send the report to DEDCC.
DVD/Films/Video Logical Base Review
•Logical Base title: Susan and Barbara’s screenshots with instructions will be forwarded to Jan.
•Highlighted institution names: following the model of Reserves, when one searches an institution’s logical base, then that name should be highlighted in the menu bar at all levels (search screen, results lists, browse index, full view, and call nos. and availability), not “All Five Colleges” as is now the case.
•Tabs, Basic Search Options, Advanced Search Options, Basic Search Examples: keep all “as is” for now.
Recommendations about decreasing the number of field currently indexed in Title field searching
In their recent Aleph Audit, Ex Libris recommended that the Five Colleges modify the number of fields that are searched in a title field search, in order to reduce the number of false hits for users doing a keyword search by title. Currently, the WTI index includes words from 43 tags in the bib record and this number should be reduced.
Bonnie compiled a list of MARC fields that are currently searched in the Title Index. RIO recommends that only the following fields be searched. Bryan will send the RIO recommendations to the Five Colleges cataloguing committee for their advice.
