Minutes October 20, 2008

Present: Bryan Goodwin (chair), Susan Kimball (minutes), Beth Lang, Barbara Polowy, Bonnie Vigeland

WorldCat Local
The Boston Library Consortium has decided to purchase WorldCat Local (WCL) as the only system that can handle resource sharing across the various OPACs in the consortium. AC and UMass are members of BLC so will be required to implement WCL. At this time, it’s not clear whether the rest of the 5 College Libraries will decide to go with WCL as well. The timeline set for implementation includes the following:
November 1, 2008 – Activation of WCL for all BLC Libraries
February 27, 2009 – Consortial borrowing among BLC Libraries
Susan Kimball is the primary contact at Amherst, Kathy Ridenour Leigh is the primary contact at UMass.

Spellchecking in ALEPH
AMC was alerted to a library that has implemented a spellchecking solution in their ALEPH OPAC. It is at the University of the Pacific at: http://pacificat.pacific.edu. It is being put on Test and Jan will notify us when it is ready. Everyone expressed interest in how/when it works (keyword searching only, lookup against a known error list, etc.). Bryan will contact Daniel Forsman, the author of the spellchecker and ask how it works.

January Program
There was a unanimous decision to go with a “lightnening talk” format, allowing each person to talk for 5 minutes with time for informal mingling after so individuals with particular interests can discuss in more depth. 2 people will talk from each institution. Everyone will canvas colleagues at their institution about what topic would be of interest. Suggestions included:
- First Year Instruction
- Orientation programs
- Web 2.0
- Integration w/non-library academic support (writing center, IT, quantitative skills, etc.)
- Information Literacy programs
- Assessment
- Changing patterns in Reference (desk, IM, phone, personal contacts, etc.)
Possible dates are Thursday, January 8th 2-4pm and Friday, January 9th 9-11am. Everyone will check with colleagues about major conflicts. Bonnie will look into the availability of space at Hampshire.
