Research, Instruction and Outreach Committee (RIO)
Minutes of the September 15, 2008 Meeting
Present: Bryan Goodwin (chair), Susan Kimball, Beth Lang (recorder), Barbara Polowy, Bonnie Vigeland

Next Meeting Date
October 20th 9:00am, at Hampshire College Library (note change of date from original schedule of Fall RIO meetings.)
Annual Reference Librarians Meeting
Susan has arranged for us to use the Amherst Alumni House, and also arranged for light refreshments. We anticipate 30-40 librarians may attend the meeting, scheduled for 2-4pm on Monday, September 22.
RIO January Conference
RIO would like to host a conference for 5-college and other area librarians, sometime in January, on current topics of interest to reference and instruction staff. RIO members will investigate presenter possibilities and themes at our next meeting. Suggestions so far: Library 2.0

Updates on old topics:

•Next Gen catalog: FCLC is awaiting information about the direction that the Boston Library Consortium will take regarding the use of WorldCat Local as their virtual catalog for BLC members (two 5C institutions are also BLC members) before moving ahead with DEDCC next gen catalog proposal.

•Change to fields indexed in Title Keyword Fields Searches: Changes to title keyword field searches recommended by Ex Libris and 5-C Cataloging committee have been made to Test OPAC. While there is not a dramatic difference in search results from before, RIO testers agreed that the changes should be moved to production catalog. Bryan will contact AMC to make this move.

•SFX in OPAC: Susan continues with the AC project to pre-populate 5C Dep forms for articles, and will share her technique with the 5C SFX group once it is ready for “prime time.” Same for AC project of adding print serial records into SFX.

RIO Annual Report
Bryan’s revised draft was accepted by the committee, and forwarded to FCLC.
