Research, Instruction and Outreach Committee (RIO)
Minutes of the August 17, 2009 Meeting
Present: Bryan Goodwin, Susan Kimball (recorder), Beth Lang, Charlotte Slocum Patriquin, Barbara Polowy (chair), Bonnie Vigeland
Minutes were approved for June 22, 2009 meeting
Charlotte reported that the FCLC is still discussing the proposed charge for RIO. There hasn’t been a decision on which group will pursue an alternative to Syndetics but it’s possible that the new Public Interface group would take this on.
Bryan asked for input as he drafts the 2008-09 Annual Report. Barbara suggested an emphasis on the review of our charge and our eagerness to move beyond the OPAC and enthusiasm for working on consortial reference and instruction initiatives. Bryan will send out a draft to the full committee.
Bryan suggested that when ALEPH is down a standard screen be presented to users to avoid the confusion that the generic File Not Found or 404 error screen produces. Perhaps something similar to what we had during the v.19 upgrade with contact information. Barbara will contact Step about it.
The Technical Services Consolidation Task Group sent a message about including tours of technical service departments in RIO’s new librarian tours. We will schedule tours in January 2010 and invite technical service staff in addition to new library staff. Barbara will contact Sharon Domier to let her know.
The fall gathering of 5C Reference Librarians will be held on Friday, September 25th at 2:00pm. Susan will check what it cost last year and try to book the Amherst College Alumni House again. Hampshire’s faculty dining commons is a backup. We’ll plan for 30 attendees. The meeting will start with brief updates by the RIO reps covering information that is relevant to 5C and introductions of new staff. Following will be digital poster sessions with 5 tables set up for discussion with a representative from each institution. Barbara will draft a save the date announcement and everyone should send it out to their colleagues. Everyone should have a blurb describing their “poster” by the next RIO meeting.
