OPAC Downtime Message
Stephanie suggested that RIO be responsible for the Aleph downtime message. The UMass RIO representative will be the gatekeeper as she is already trained. The message will be a bounce to screen with the same message from the summer for planned outage times (Saturday night to Sunday morning), and a bounce to screen with a link to OCLC Worldcat for unplanned outage times.

September 25th Five College Reference Librarians Gathering – Debriefing
The event was successful, especially the time to mingle at the beginning and the flexible format of poster viewing. Suggestions for next time are to make the event slightly longer, have a second presenter at the posters so everyone has a chance to see all the stations, raise the computer screens if possible, and have some kind of wrap up/closing so the end is not as abrupt. The timing of late September is difficult, next year consider an email to share information about and new staff and new policies effecting 5 college students in mid August, and have a poster session or other event in late October.

New Charge
RIO will petition FCLC to change its name from “Reference, Instruction and Outreach” to “Research, Instruction and Outreach”, and the wording in the new charge from “information literacy” to “research education”, as research is a more meaningful term to a broad audience than reference or information literacy.

Winter Program
The focus of the next meeting will be the winter program. Proposed dates are January 8th, with a snow date of January 11th. We will check with DEDDC to avoid conflicts with their winter program. Program ideas include a focus on instruction/how to teach, with an outside person brought in to present and facilitate. Amherst had a successful event with a Theater Department faculty member, focusing on the performance aspects of teaching. RIO members will ask for suggestions from colleagues, and bring possibilities to the next meeting.

Library Tours for New Staff
To accommodate varying January schedules at the different schools and not occur too close to the winter program, library tours for new staff will be planned for spring break week in March.

Next Meeting
Focus on January program, discuss new initiatives ideas from the September 25th meeting. The next meeting will take place Monday, November 16th at 9:30am.

Respectfully submitted,
Chrissa Godbout (Mount Holyoke), recorder
