BIOL497H Course Details

Look for informational meetings about this course in late October.

COURSE OBJECTIVE
An introduction to the biology of tropical ecosystems, including intensive, hands-on investigation of coastal and marine ecosystems on a tropical island. Field investigation will serve as a vehicle for introducing students to the ecology, behavior, taxonomy, and physiology of the island’s organisms. This is a three-credit course offered by UMass Amherst.

PRE-REQUISITES
The only pre-requisites are good swimming ability, intense interest in biology, and at least one year of college biology courses. Additional biology courses are very helpful, though, and will help you gain more from the course. First-year students are not eligible for the course.

COURSE MEETING TIMES
In addition to the time spent on St. John, the course will meet at UMass twice weekly, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 to 6:00, during spring semester. The field trip will take place during Spring Break, 3/15-3/23, 2008.

ACCOMODATIONS
At the Virgin Islands Environmental Resource Station (VIERS) in St. John, Virgin Islands. Accommodations at VIERS are rustic but comfortable. St. John is one of the most beautiful places you’ll ever see.

INSTRUCTORS
Bruce Byers (ornithology),
Betsy Dumont (mammalogy),
Sean Werle (invertebrate biology),
Blake Gilmore (underwater exploration)
Francis Juanes (ichthyology),
Ana Caicedo (botany),
and perhaps others.

ENROLLMENT and PAYMENT
Enrollment is limited to 25 students.

Total cost is $1750 per person.
Payments are due as follows
November 15th - $750
December 6th — $500
January 29th — $500

We will have a “final decision” meeting in November. To reserve a spot in the course, you must bring your $750 deposit to that meeting (or arrange to turn it in beforehand). In the event that more than 25 students make deposits, a lottery will determine the final roster. Note: we cannot accept personal checks, so you should make payments with money orders or bank checks.
