Seeks a talented individual to serve as an Oceanographer supporting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrations Office of Response and Restoration (OR&R).OR&R is a program office in the National Ocean Service that responds to threats in order to protect and restore coastal resources. To do this OR&R provides interdisciplinary scientific response to releases of oil, chemicals, and contaminants, protects and restores NOAA trust resources, and promotes the protection and restoration of coral ecosystems. The Oceanographer will be a team member of the Emergency Response Division (ERD) within OR&R. ERD provides OR&R with scientific and technical support. It is a team-oriented and collaborative work environment.
Responsibilities:
•The incumbent of this position will provide research support on trajectory forecast modeling for emergency response needs. As part of his/her efforts, independent evaluation, selection and application of
algorithms that describe hydrodynamics or particle movement will be required.
•All projects the incumbent will work on are related to the application of physical oceanography and modeling for emergency response.
•The incumbent will provide analysis on client needs, perform research on strategies to satisfy needs and propose strategies to a workgroup for decision on implementation.
•The incumbent will work under limited supervision to evaluate, select and apply state of the art technology and research to evaluating needs for the development of research priorities and tools.
•The incumbent will participate on various research and development teams. While endpoints will be identified through Division management and some direct supervision will be provided, the incumbent will be responsible for progressively being able to take input from team meetings, design objectives and propose strategies for reaching endpoints.
Qualifications:
•Minimum of a Master’s degree in physical oceanography.
•Must be able to apply concepts of physical oceanography in coastal areas.
•Write and implement code for transport and/or fate modeling (C++ preferred).
•Good writing and communication skills, in particular communicating research results, and the knowledge of working on teams is required. However, no previous experience in emergency response is necessary.
