Five College Funded Summer Research
These internships offer students enrolled in the five colleges financial support for summer research positions at approved marine laboratories. Juniors are given priority during selection, and seniors are not eligible. You do not need to be working on the certificate to be eligible for these internships.

***You must attend Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, or the University of Massachusetts(Amherst) to be eligible for these internships.***

Note: Smith College students must apply for these internships through the Agnes Shedd Andreae Fund


Project sites include:

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) labs, field sites, and National Estuarine Research Reserves all over the United States including (but not limited to) North Carolina, Texas, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, New Jersey, Florida, Maine,and Maryland. Past internship opportunities have included participation in research on marine mammals, sea turtles, birds, seagrass, salt marsh ecology and restoration, fish biology/ecology, climate change, and marine policy. Interns have the opportunity to gain valuable experience working in a research lab, performing data analysis, conducting fieldwork from small boats, and participating in research cruises on NOAA ships. The program requires a 10-week commitment with a flexible start date. Stipends are $ 3,800 if housing is not provided by the marine lab, and $ 2,800 if housing is provided.

These internships may provide an excellent opportunity to fulfill the field study and independent research requirements for the Five College Coastal & Marine Sciences certificate.
***Students are not required to be working towards the certificate to be awarded an internship.
