The Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey (Seasonal)
Migratory Shorebird and Beach Nesting Bird Seasonal Steward – Hereford Inlet, Cape May County, New Jersey needs a field assistant for monitoring and management of migratory shorebirds and beach nesting birds. The primary sites that will be monitored are Stone Harbor Point, Champagne Island, and North Wildwood.
Dates: 1 May – 30 Nov 2009.
Duties:weekly shorebird surveys and intensive band resighting effort, fencing and posting critical areas for foraging and resting, locating and monitoring piping plover and American oystercatcher nests and broods, erecting predator exclosures, posting, patrolling nesting areas, and monitoring human disturbance. Twice monthly surveys of colonial nesting birds, including black skimmer, least tern, common tern, and royal tern will also be conducted. The employee will also help conduct public outreach and coordinate and schedule work for several volunteers during the fall period, and fall data entry. Applicants should have a degree in wildlife biology, ecology, or related field and should also be in good physical condition, able and willing to work independently and with a team, organized and disciplined, and enthusiastic in dealing with the public. Ability to identify shorebirds is a must. Experience handling a small boat or kayak is helpful. The work-week will be somewhat flexible but will include weekend hours, especially between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Employee will need to provide their own transportation to and from sites (all sites are within 5 miles of one another), including the ability to occasionally transport equipment and materials (posts, signs, rope, post-hole digger, etc.). Ownership or access to a computer is necessary. Housing is NOT provided (expect some difficulty finding short-term housing, particularly in areas closest to coast).
