There are several types of summer research opportunities available in coastal and marine sciences. Each internship category listed below has its own application requirements and deadlines, so read carefully.
1. Five College Funded Summer Research Internships offer students enrolled in the five colleges support for summer research positions at approved marine laboratories. The program awards $ 3,800 for a ten-week period. Juniors are given priority during selection.
*****The list of available Summer 2008 internships will be posted in mid-January.*****
Application Deadline: February 15, 2008.
Download an application form and see the list of required application materials.
Note: Smith College students must apply for these internships through the Summer Research Fellows Program.
Project sites include:
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Students have worked at various NOAA labs and field sites all over the United States including North Carolina, Texas, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Maryland. Internship opportunities include participating in research on marine mammals, seagrass, salt marsh ecology and restoration, and fish biology and ecology. Interns have the opportunity to gain valuable experience working in a research lab, performing data analysis, helping perform fieldwork from small boats, and participating on research cruises on NOAA ships.
James J. Howard Marine Sciences Laboratory
Located on the New Jersey shore at Sandy Hook, this lab is a state-of-the-art marine research facility shared by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the State of New Jersey. The primary mission of the lab is to conduct research in ecology, leading to a better understanding of both coastal and estuarine organisms and the effects of human activities on nearshore marine populations.
Duke University Marine Laboratory
This lab is situated on Pivers Island within the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The area's system of a barrier island, sounds, and estuaries is rich in flora and fauna, diverse habitats, including rivers, creeks, mud flats, sand beaches, dunes, marshes, peat bogs, cypress swamps, bird islands and coastal forests.
2. The Woods Hole Marine Consortium
The Marine Biological Laboratory provides the opportunity for undergraduates to carry out research in most areas of marine science at Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Some internships involve intensive research in lab and field, presentation of a talk, and submission of a manuscript for publication. Other internships involve animal care and culturing.
Note: The WHMSC application process uses a different application form. Download an application and view host scientists and potential project descriptions at the WHMSC website.
Application Deadline: February 8, 2008.
