Opera 2009 FIVE COLLEGE OPERA PROJECT 2009
Five College Opera Project presents a classic and a modern masterpiece - This year’s production includes a cast and crew of nearly 100 students, an orchestra comprised of more than fifty student instrumentalists, and nationally renowned lighting director Beverly Emmons in residence. “The students are amazing,” says director Roger Babb (Mount Holyoke College) of the dozens of students who have come together from each campus for the operas. “It’s been interesting working with music directors and opera students. The production is going to be really exciting.” Orchestral director Lanfranco Marcelletti (UMass) is enthusiastic about the production. “…Weill’s approach to this music [The Seven Deadly Sins], with cabaret elements and strong and effective orchestra writing, makes it unique...." In describing the set, Babb envisions that “the orchestra will be on stage acting as the background of a ...movement collage that will enact The Seven Deadly Sins. Anna 1 (the singer) will interact with Anna 2 (the mover/dancer) and the movement ensemble in front of the banked orchestra. The Quartet will be situated above the orchestra on a projecting platform. We imagine a stunning visual frame for Brecht/Weill's dramatic score.” Tickets for both operas, which will be staged at Mount Holyoke College's Rooke Theater from Feb 26 through March 1, are on sale now. They are priced at $15--reserved seating--and $5 for students and seniors. Visit the Mount Holyoke Box Office website, call 413-538-2406 or email rookeboxoffice@gmail.com. A director’s pre-performance talk will take place on February 28 at 7 p.m., at Mount Holyoke’s Pratt Hall. Based on previous experience, we expect that all shows will be fully sold out.
