Welcome to the Five College Schools Partnership

Eric Foner met in a joint session with Springfield Public Schools Teaching American History participants and members of the Five College Learning in Retirement program on Thursday, October 13, at Mount Holyoke College. Foner talked about writing and researching his Pulitzer prize-winning book, The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery. The Springfield teachers then participated in the sesquicentennial symposium, Civil War Causes and Consequences at the University of Massachusetts on October 14-15. Kelley Brown, Chair of the History Department at Easthampton High School and member of the Partnership Advisory Committee, led a session on “Teaching the Civil War.” Historians included David Blight, formerly of Amherst College and now at Yale University, Lois Brown and Lynda Morgan from MHC, Leonard Richards, Manisha Sinha, Bruce Laurie, and John Higginson from UMass Amherst, Charles Dew from Williams College, Tera Hunter, from Princeton, and Paul Finkleman from the Albany Law School.
