The Struggle for Equality: the Civil War and the Cost of Reconstruction

Course Description:
This course is designed for schoolteachers in the Springfield Public Schools to increase their knowledge of American history. The course will focus on 19th century America: westward expansion; development of transportation systems, the development of the political parties, slavery and the abolitionist movement, women’s suffrage, the civil war, and emancipation. Texts for the course are: Potter, The Impending Crisis; Foner, The Story of American Freedom; Blight, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass; Watson, Liberty and Power; and Shaara, Killer Angels. Leonard Richards will serve as the primary faculty member for the course; visiting faculty will include Manisha Sinha, Joyce Berkman, and David Glassberg. Field trips are planned to the Stowe House in Hartford, Ct., and the Hancock Shaker Village.

Schedule: July 6- July 23, 2004

Week I
July 6: Looking for sweeping overview of 19th century America with Professor Robert Bonner, Amherst College. An afternoon visit to the Smith Museum.

July 7: Suffrage Movement at Seneca Falls with Professor Joyce Berkman, University of Massachusetts.

July 8: The Civil War in Photographs to be held at the Springfield Quadrangle Museums with Professor David Glassberg, University of Massachusetts. An afternoon history tour of the City of Springfield is scheduled with Steve Strimer.

July 9: Workshop on Frederick Douglass with Professor David Blight, Yale University. An afternoon walking tour in Florence exploring Sojourner Truth’s life in Northampton is schedule.

Week II
July 12: Jacksonian Era; westward expansion; the growth of the parties; and Indian Removal with Professor Leo Richards, University of Massachusetts. The afternoon will be spent planning curriculum.

July 13: Early 19th – The Parties; Westward Land; Transportation Systems with Professor Leo Richards, University of Massachusetts. A trip to the Dickinson Homestead is scheduled.

July 14: The South and Slavery with Professor Manisha Sinha, University of Massachusetts. In the Afternoon we will explore Emerson and Thoreau with Professor Barry O’Connell, Amherst College.

July 15: Slavery, Abolitionist Movement with Professor Manisha Sinha, University of Massachusetts. The afternoon is scheduled with Robert Bonner, Amherst College.

July 16: A Field Trip to the Stowe House and Mark Twain House in Hartford, CT. with Professor Robert Bonner, Amherst College.

Week III
July 19: The Civil War: Killer Angels (Gettysburg) with Professor Leo Richards, University of Massachusetts. Afternoon: Music from the Civil War Era.

July 20: The Civil War with Professor Leo Richards, University of Massachusetts. Afternoon: Writing Historical Narrative

July 21: The Civil War with Professor Leo Richards, University of Massachusetts. Afternoon: Writing Historical Narrative with Professor Barry O’Connell, Amherst College.

July 22: Emancipation with Professor Manisha Sinha, University of Massachusetts. Afternoon: Evaluations with the Donohue Institute.

July 23: Field Trip to the Hancock Shaker Village
