The Interconnected World Summer Institute 2004 The Interconnected World: Teaching World History and Geography in the Middle Grades This course was designed to support the professional development of middle school social studies teachers in the Holyoke and Springfield Public Schools. The course provided teachers with a depth of background knowledge on world history and geography as outlined in the state curriculum frameworks and explored instructional strategies that promote literacy and critical thinking. A one-week summer institute was scheduled for June 29-July 2 with four follow-up Saturday mornings in the fall of 2004. (Tentative dates for the fall are September 25, October 16, October 30, and November 13.) Sessions began at 8:30 and ended at 3pm. Three graduate credits were available by registering through Continuing Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Registration forms were available the first day of the summer institute. The summer institute was be held in Seelye Hall, Room 201, Smith College.
