How to Become a Credentialed Driver at SC In order to comply with the insurer's requirements that we credential drivers, we must collect from each person who is to be authorized to drive a College-owned, leased or rental vehicle (including motorized equipment and/or unregistered equipment): All undergraduate students who wish to be van certified drivers must go through the van certification training held by Sharon Fagan, SGA Van Coordinator, Student Affairs, Campus Center 206, x4950. Also, the student must complete and sign the following forms: Smith College Annual Driver License and Record Update form; Driver Agreement to Terms, Conditions, Rules and Regulations form; and provide a photocopy of their driver's license (front & back). The van certification training is in two parts. The first part: van driver certification training will be held in September and October; the second part: a defensive driving presentation by OneBeacon Insurance Company will be in October and February. Dates are listed here. Undergraduate students who miss the October defensive driving presentation dates cannot be certified until after completing the defensive driving presentation offered in February. Undergraduate students cannot bypass this process; the only person able to do van certifications for students in 2009-2010 is Sharon Fagan in the SGA Office. The College provides the insurer with a comprehensive list of these drivers, including their names, dates of birth, driver's license numbers and state of issuance. Our insurer will use this list to check the status and history of all authorized, credentialed drivers. Individuals who are affected by this requirement are those who:
Persons who drive only their personal vehicle on College business occasionally should also seriously consider submitting information to be a credentialed driver. Five Colleges carries insurance up to million. A serious "at-fault" or surchargable accident with a loaded passenger van could easily exceed personal insurance and put personal and family assets at risk. Being credentialed will enable the driver to be covered by the College's excess insurance while driving a personal vehicle on College business. All authorized drivers must complete the Annual Driver License and Record Update form and provide a photocopy of their driver's license to RuthAnn McCloud in the Office of the Vice President for Finance & Administration. To ensure transition from one academic year to the next, drivers must complete the credentialing process each year before September 30th. However, drivers not previously credentialed or new employees need to credential as soon as possible before they may drive a College or rented vehicle. If you have questions, call RuthAnn McCloud in the Office of the Vice President for Finance & Administration at 585.2200. | |
