Additional Fall 2015 African Studies Courses

Course Title: Introduction to African Popular Culture, CSI 190T
Campus: Hampshire College
Instructor: Rachel Engmann
Enrollment: This course is limited to First Year Students.
Class schedule: 09/09/15 12/18/15 Hampshire College, Franklin Patterson Hall 107 CRS TTH 09:00AM 10:20AM

Course description:

Introduction to African Popular Culture: This course is an introduction to African popular culture. We will look at film, television, photography, literature, music, art, cartoons, fashion and sports from across the African continent. Instead of viewing African popular culture as insignificant frivolities hastily produced, fleetingly consumed and swiftly discarded, we will examine the ways in which it shapes, and in turn, is shaped by nationality, race, ethnicity, class, age, gender and sexuality. Paying particular attention to notions such as 'culture', 'tradition', 'modernity', 'authenticity' and 'appropriation', we will explore just how globalization, transnationalism and migration impact contemporary cosmopolitan African lived experiences. We will ask: How does pop culture translate across the African continent? What does pop culture in Africa look like when viewed through a post -colonial, -apartheid lens? What is the character of African popular culture and its relationship to other forms of culture? How does popular culture reflect and influence everyday urban and rural African lived experiences? Through readings, discussion and film this course seeks to expand knowledge, interpretive abilities, critical thinking skills and self-reflection.
