STEM Seminar: 'Engaging Curious Minds: Reflections from My Outreach'

Tue, Feb 20 2018 - 4:00pm to 5:00pm
Hasbrouck Hall Room: 138

D. Venkataraman, professor, Advanced Laboratory for Iontronic, Electronic and Nanomaterials (ALIEN) Department of Chemistry, speaks on "Engaging Curious Minds: Reflections from My Outreach."

Venkataraman says, "Chemical demonstrations that feature spectacular explosions and color changes are commonly featured items in science outreach programs. I started my science outreach efforts using demos.  These demos served as good entertainment for the audience. In this talk, I will discuss my outreach efforts over the past 15 years and what I have learned from their effectiveness. I have tried to engage K-12 students, teachers, and the general public using traditional methods such as demonstrations, hands-on experiments, and lectures. Two years ago, I became a co-organizer for Amherst Regional Middle School (ARMS) Science Club along with Ms. Jennifer Welborn, ARMS science teacher. We decided to structure the activities thematically similar to Integrated Concentration in Science (iCons) program at UMass Amherst. This club also provided a valuable opportunity to translate educational innovations at UMass Amherst to the Amherst school system. I will share the details of what we did in the science club and lessons learned from this experience."

Most STEM seminars are held at 4 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of each month during the academic year in Hasbrouck 138Everyone is welcome; no reservations are needed, and there is no charge.
