Collective Visions Lecture Series: "The Truth May Not Be Out There: On Epistemic Cultures in the Digital Age"

Tue, Feb 27 2018 - 7:30pm to 8:30pm
Kendade Hall, 305
In this talk, Fuyuki Kurasawa discusses the
emergence of evidence as a crucial site of cultural and
political struggle in digital public spaces. If expertise
is redefined and facts are contested in our ‘post-truth’
era, what kinds of epistemic cultures are social media
platforms creating and what kinds of controversies
thereby are being generated? To answer these
questions, the talk focuses on controversies
surrounding climate change and online abuse in order
to trace the social networks to which opposing sets of
digital actors are giving birth, as well as the moral
grammars and symbolic conventions that that they

employ online.
