From the Executive Director

Pfatteicher photo 1 crop sm.jpgWelcome to the Five College Consortium. Our campuses here in western Massachusetts – Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts Amherst – have a proud record of accomplishing together things that would have been difficult or impossible to manage separately. Our earliest partnerships date back more than a century, and the non-profit organization called Five Colleges, Incorporated took shape in 1965.

As you browse this website, you’ll see that our collaborative work spans the full breadth of our member campuses’ endeavors, from shared academic programs and co-curricular activities to joint administrative functions and enterprise systems. We partner to offer coursework, hire faculty and staff, manage library collections, provide insurance coverage, and much more. Every Five College program, committee, and event represents the shared trust and mutual support of our member institutions and our enduring faith that such collaborations help us be “more effective, efficient and experimental,” as our mission calls on us to be.

As the needs of our members evolve, the Consortium continues to adapt.  I invite you to explore our current initiatives and come back often to learn about our latest innovations.

Thanks for your interest,

Sarah KA Pfatteicher, PhD
