The consortium is governed by a Board of Directors of Five Colleges, Incorporated made up of the presidents of the four colleges, and the chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The executive director of Five Colleges, Incorporated serves as Clerk of the corporation and meets with the Board of Directors. The provosts and deans of faculty, the principal business officers and the chief information officers meet monthly with the executive director and/or other senior staff members of the consortium to oversee and support cooperation in academic, administrative, and information technology areas, respectively. The executive director and other Five College staff members administer the policies, projects, and joint programs agreed upon by the institutions.

Five Colleges, Incorporated operates on an annual budget of $8 million, derived from a combination of institutional assessments, grants from outside sources, income from endowments, and other institutional arrangements.
