Five College Campuses Lift Ban on Nighttime Outdoor Activities

Following recommendations from the Massachusetts Department of Health, Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith colleges and UMass Amherst have lifted the curfew on dusk to dawn activities activities that had been initiated as a precaution against mosquito-borne illnesses such as eastern equine encephalitis (EEE). The Massachusetts Department of Health had instructed campuses that curfews could be lifted after the first hard frost of the season, which would be expected to kill all mosquitos. On the evening of Saturday, October 13, the temperature dipped to the 20s Fahrenheit, cold enough to create the necessary hard frost. All outdoor evening activities will now be able to proceed as originally planned.
