Topics course.
Normally offered each academic year.: This course looks at recent Latin American films dealing with the subject of loss and mourning. With reference to general theories on the meanings of loss and its representation on film, the class studies films dealing with both public and private losses, reflecting on the differences and similarities between the two. Films looking at losses that resulted from events that affected the whole nation turn their attention to those events. By contrast, films dealing with individual loss tend to privilege the characters’ emotions. In both cases the focus on loss and mourning allows for reflections on identity, memory, and the future—reflections that blur the apparent boundary between the private and the public. Focusing mainly on films from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Peru, students will reflect on the wider social significance of these films in reference to the context where they were made. Enrollment limited to 14.
Not open to first-years, sophomores
