Health and Wellness for the Dancer

This is an intensive 1-credit class led by Professor Aston McCullough. A special, weekend-long series of workshops that address injury prevention, care and recovery for dancers. Course workshops feature guest lecturers who are experts in medicine, nutrition, rehabilitation, somatics, and professional dance. Guest lecturers will offer a sequence of seminars, small group discussion, and applied sessions during the weekend-long series with an aim toward inviting an awareness of practices that promote longevity and ease within dance training and performance.

American Ballet Theatre Studio Company returns to Mount Holyoke College with another fantastic repertoire of dances showcasing the young dancers of the Studio Company.
Tickets are $15 for general admission; $10 for students; purchase online here

Dance and Science Symposium

The Dance Science Symposium is an annual meeting that aims to bring together dancers and dance scientists to discuss critical and emerging research within the field of dance science and medicine. The panel of speakers will reflect diversity in praxis and theory with respect to their dance training and performance histories, as well as in their respective areas of scientific inquiry and expertise. Presentations will address pertinent questions related to dance training and performance in research, as well as illustrate novel applications of dance-based practices or interventions in community contexts and/or clinical populations. The symposium will culminate in a panel discussion on the current state of research in dance science and medicine, with space for musings and insights as they relate to the next steps and evolutions for research in dance.

Philadelphia’s Philadanco returns to UMass Amherst as part of its celebration of 50 years as an African-American contemporary dance company, presenting a mixture of iconic Philadanco works from the past half-century, as well as new work that highlights their continued engagement with today's most important social issues. Among these new works is 2018's Endangered Species, a heart-wrenching piece that takes on police violence towards African-American males, as well as Super 8, Enemy Behind the Gates, and Folded Prism.

Ashwini Ramaswamy’s Let the Crows Come

Evoking mythography and ancestry, Ashwini Ramaswamy’s Let the Crows Come depicts crows as messengers for the living and guides for the departed. Using Bharatanatyam (south Indian classical dance) and Carnatic (south Indian classical music) as points of inspiration, creator Ramaswamy of Ragamala Dance Company collaborates with musicians, dancers, and DJ Jace Clayton. In a series of three dance solos with live music by three composers, the resulting work explores how memory and homeland channel both guidance and dislocation.

The iconic dance company returns to UMass Amherst for an unforgettable evening of movement, music, and culture. Recognized as “a vital American cultural ambassador to the world,” for 60 years the company has shared amazing work by Ailey himself and over 90 other choreographers. This performance will feature a mixture of new work as well as the critically acclaimed Revelations.

Earthdance’s annual Winter Jam centers around the theme of darkness and light. One of Earthdance's biggest events of the year, the Winter Jam averages 180–200 people. Consisting of workshops, jams and performances in Contact Improvisation (CI).

For dance educators, classroom teachers, social justice educators and facilitators, professional and pre-professional dancers, and any movers looking to integrate social justice work into their practice.

A.P.E. @ HAWLEY, in collaboration with SCDT, is proud to be continuing the historic January movement series. A monthlong series of weekend workshops and performances, this year's festival offers a Teen Dance Weekend, hosts over 15 Artists in Residence, and focuses on diverse approaches to dance as a performative art, including improvisation, contemporary performance, hip hop, and modern. Presented by local, national, and internationally acclaimed artists, these performances and workshops provide students and professionals alike with the unique opportunity to engage with highly regarded and innovative artists in the field of dance today. Week one is the Architects, week two is Contemporary dance in Performance, week three showcases local artists in residence and improvisation in performance, and week four showcases a working group in residence. Gregory Maqoma, the South African choreographer of William Kentridge’s The Head & the Load, returns with Cion: Requiem of Ravel’s Boléro. The work weaves a narrative of greed, power, and the pain of mourning with a moving live score interrogating Ravel’s music through South African vocal traditions.

Deep Blue Sea, which will have its world premiere at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City, is a culmination of years of work by the iconic choreographer Bill T. Jones. This work-in-progress performance follows an artist residency that will transform MASS MoCA’s largest venue; the Hunter Center will be stretched to the very limits of its physical capacity. The work, a meditation on the nature of finding community in this confusing era of ours, will eventually incorporate a cast of 100.
