Middlebury College dance faculty member, Andrea Olsen hosts the Place of Dance Book Celebration Performance on Sunday, April 13 at 2 and 6 p.m., featuring collaborators in dance, music, light, and text. Olsen’s new book includes 125 images and 30 interviews woven into teaching stories and informational text, published by Wesleyan University Press. Created with colleague Caryn McHose, this book and the concert drawn from its pages is for anyone interested in living in their bodies with awareness. The celebration at Smith College, Scott Dance Studio Theatre features the talents and visions of eight artists from the book, including Five College faculty and Middlebury alumni. The Smith performance is part of a series of international events, with featured artists in the book from various locales performing together.
Artists in this event include performer/choreographers Chris Aiken and Angie Hauser, Lisa Gonzales, Paul Matteson, Peter Schmitz, Andrea Olsen, Nancy Stark Smith, and Pamela Vail; musician Mike Vargas; and lighting designer Cathy Couch.
Reading: “The Place of Dance: Book Reading.” Saturday, April 12, 5 – 6:30 p.m. at Window, 126 Main Street, Northampton, MA. Co-sponsored by Contact Quarterly and A.P.E. Using The Place of Dance as a frame for the evening, author Olsen will read stories from her new book; introduce area artists that are present and referenced in various chapters through photographs, stories, and interviews; and discuss the overlapping circles of dance practice and articulation¾moving, writing, choreographing, and performing.
