Austin thanks all of you again for your intense, focused and spirited work in the auditions Saturday: he was very impressed. Choosing a final cast was very difficult, especially because different dancers excelled at different phrases. His final selections are listed below in alphabetical order.

Style of Movement/Theme: Contemporary dance about neuroscience students in a college classroom who keep falling asleep during a lecture and awakening into a dance.
Music: Talking Heads
Cast Size: 8-10
Choreographic Needs: highly physical; involves partnering and moving over, under and on top of tables 
Rehearsal Schedule: Rehearsals will be Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:00-9:00pm at Smith

Title: Judgments
Concert(s): University Dancers Concert, December 6-7, 2013
Style of Movement/Theme: Contemporary dance about prejudice and the judicial system
Music: includes several pieces by rock violinist Jerry Goodman
Cast Size: 12
Choreographic Needs: extremely diverse cast in terms of racial and ethnic backgrounds, gender, and gender expression; strong technique; powerful, passionate, strong performers; love of improvisation; excellent rehearsal etiquette. Particularly interested in dancers who have the ability to emotionally engage their audience. Also, someone who knows sign language would be useful.
Rehearsal Schedule: Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 6:00-8:00pm (full group) and 8:00-9:00pm (smaller groups). Must be available for run-throughs the Monday and Tuesday of Thanksgiving week, tech the Sunday after Thanksgiving (December 1), and tech rehearsals leading up to the performance.

Style of Movement/Theme: Contemporary
Cast Size: Group work
Rehearsal Schedule: Rehearsals will be twice a week for 2 hours: one evening during the week and probably early Sunday afternoons.

Style of Movement/Theme: Contemporary ballet about the individual/collective response to the ephemeral
Music: Fratres for Violin, Strings, and Percussion by Arvo Part
Cast Size: 5-7 (all women)
Choreographic Needs: wants to do the piece en pointe, but if the dancers aren't strong enough for the complicated coordination required, may set it in flat shoes (dancers should audition en pointe)

Style of Movement/Theme: Contemporary dance influenced by snake and circle mythology
Music: Mangrove Kipling and James Edmund
Cast Size: up to 9
Choreographic Needs: improvisational and compositional skills; floor and inversion skills; contact and partnering skills; will be working with red leather gloves and thick, long black power cables
Rehearsal Schedule: Rehearsals will be during an intensive residency at Smith from October 19-27. Dancers need to be available on both weekends of the residency for 5-6 hour rehearsals, and during the week of the residency for evening rehearsals during the time window of 5:00-10:00pm (exact times TBD). The three weeks in between the residency and the Smith College Faculty Concert there will be rehearsals twice a week (likely times: Tuesday 7:00-9:00pm and Friday 3:00-5:00pm)

Concert(s): Hampshire Winter Concert, February 20-22, 2014, and also possibly the FCDD Faculty Concert at Amherst College, March 6-8, 2014
Style of Movement/Theme: This work will be an investigation into the choreographic concepts of visibility and corporate identity. This work will seek to answer questions such as: how do we find individuality in communal movement and how do we perform ourselves “authentically” in a group? The movement language will be athletic drawing on both Cunningham and Limón movement traditions, which will be developed further by the group.
Cast Size: 10-13
Rehearsal Schedule: Rehearsals will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-8:00pm at Hampshire College.

Concert(s): University Dancers Concert, December 6-7, 2013
Style of Movement/Theme: House Jazz: classical Jazz technique abstracted and combined with house style footwork (& other urban flavor)
Cast Size: 5 or 7
Choreographic Needs: two male dancers; possible work with props
Rehearsal Schedule: Mondays from 6:00-8:00pm and Fridays from 2:00-4:00pm

Concert(s): FCDD Faculty Concert at Amherst College, March 6-8, 2014
Cast Size: 4 (men and women)
Choreographic Needs: strong movers willing to improvise to find material; the piece will play with doubling, shadows, alter egos, and being in and out of line
Rehearsal Schedule: There will be light rehearsals in the fall (likely once a week)

Marilyn Middleton Sylla will also be choreographing two pieces this year. One will be performed at the Mount Holyoke College Faculty Concert, November 14-16, 2013. Auditions for the Smith College Senior Thesis Concert!!

(the studio will be open at 3:30 p.m. for warm-up)

The audition will consist of a brief structured improvisation and a contemporary dance phrase. There are seven choreographers auditioning for dancers.

The Senior Thesis Concert is a fully produced concert presented in Hallie Flanagan Theatre, April 4-6.

Seeking dancers strong in a range of current performance techniques as well as the Graham Technique.  The Martha Graham Dance Company guarantees a minimum number of weeks of work per year to its core group of dancers including national and international touring. Dancers of the Graham Company are members of the American Guild of Musical Artists AFL-CIO.  


You must register to guarantee a place at the audition.

Trinity Laban Contemporary Dance Workshop and Audition

Trinity Laban, one of Europe's leading centres for the training of professional contemporary dance artists, is holding a workshop and audition weekend in New York City. The dance workshop comprises a creative session on both days; a presentation and discussion about postgraduate and undergraduate programmes at Trinity Laban, including Study Year Abroad, and an opportunity to audition for the BA (Hons) Contemporary Dance programme. The audition is an integral part of the workshop on Sunday. The Question and Answer session, following the presentation, will give you the chance to get detailed information and discuss your interests with members of the Dance faculty.
