Independent Plus Courses: How to Apply

Questions? Email fclrc@hfa.umass.edu, call 413-542-5264 (413-542-LANG), or attend a drop-in session.

Time Table

Review of applications for Fall 2017 starts Apr. 3, 2017. Admission is on a rolling basis. Applications will continue to be accepted through the first week of the semester as long as space remains available. Students who apply and submit schedule information by May 15, 2017 will receive priority in scheduling and course location.

How to Apply

  1. Read the Independent Plus course information page
  2. Download and submit the application.
  3. Schedule an interview by e-mailing fclrc@hfa.umass.edu or calling 413-542-5264. The admissions coordinator for Independent Plus courses is Amy Wordelman.
  4. IMPORTANT: Put the admissions email address (fclrc@hfa.umass.edu) in your email contacts list to avoid having messages go to spam. Also, if you have not heard back about your application within a day or two, check your spam and contact us if you have not heard received a response.

Continuing Students

A student who has taken an Independent Plus course before does not need to submit a new application. A continuing student should e-mail fclrc@hfa.umass.edu stating the language and course level desired. Center staff members will reply with registration and schedule submission instructions. Students who make course requests and submit schedule information by May 15, 2017 will receive priority in scheduling and course location.

Placements

A student who has prior experience with the language should contact the Center as soon as possible to arrange for a placement assessment. Requests for placements made after the pre-registration period cannot always be accommodated. A student who is currently abroad should e-mail the Center to make alternative application and placement arrangements.
