Elementary Modern Standard Arabic I

Class Meeting Times:  Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 9:00 am – 12:15 pm

This intensive course introduces the basics of Modern Standard Arabic using all four primary language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students will learn the alphabet, learn the vocabulary and skills necessary for everyday interactions, and learn skills necessary to begin to read and analyze basic texts in Arabic.

Levantine Arabic I

Course Meeting Location: Amherst College
Class Meeting Times:  Monday, Wednesday, Friday 2:00 - 5:00 pm
Credits: 4
Tuition: $1200
This course introduces Levantine Colloquial Arabic to students who already have elementary level knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic or another Arabic dialect. The course focuses on everyday spoken communication. Class sessions will include role plays, question and answer activities, and discussion. Emphasis will be on vocabulary acquisition, development of oral fluency, listening comprehension, and acquisition of the socio-linguistic knowledge necessary to use the colloquial language in culturally appropriate ways. Prerequisite: One year of college-level Modern Standard Arabic in a course that included some speaking practice in MSA or an Arabic dialect

MOROCCAN Arabic I

This course introduces Moroccan Colloquial Arabic to students who already have elementary level knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic or another Arabic dialect. The course focuses on everyday spoken communication. Class sessions will include role plays, question and answer activities, and discussion. Emphasis will be on vocabulary acquisition, development of oral fluency, listening comprehension, and acquisition of the socio-linguistic knowledge necessary to use the colloquial language in culturally appropriate ways. This intensive course continues introducing students to the basics of Modern Standard Arabic using all four primary language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students will develop conversational and listening skills and further practice in reading and composing simple texts in Modern Standard Arabic.  Prerequisite: Elementary Modern Standard Arabic I or the equivalent.
