Elementary HINDI I

This intensive course introduces the student to speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in Modern Hindi. Students will learn to read and write the Hindi script; learn the vocabulary, usage, and cultural knowledge required to participate in common everyday interactions; and develop basic reading and composition skills in written Hindi. Class sessions and homework assignments will emphasize using the language in ways a student might encounter when living or studying in a Hindi-speaking environment

Hindi for Hindi-Urdu Speakers I

Course Dates:  May 27 – July 2, 2014

Class Meeting Times:  Monday, Wednesday, Friday 1:30 – 4:30 pm

This is an entry-level course in Hindi for students who speak Hindi or Urdu at an intermediate or advanced level but do not read and write in Hindi. Emphasis will be on learning to read and write the Hindi script, acquisition of formal vocabulary and grammatical knowledge, reading basic Hindi texts and composition of simple texts in Hindi. Prerequisite: Speaking knowledge of Hindi or Urdu at the intermediate level or above.

This intensive course continues an introduction to speaking, listening, reading, and writing Modern Hindi. The course emphasizes development of everyday conversational skills, development of cultural competence, acquisition of formal grammatical structures, and basic reading and composition skills in Hindi. Class sessions and homework assignments will emphasize using the language in ways a student might encounter when living or studying in a Hindi-speaking environment. Prerequisite: Elementary Hindi I or the equivalent.

Hindi for Hindi-Urdu Speakers II

This course follows Hindi for Hindi-Urdu Speakers I. The Level II course presupposes a reading knowledge of  Hindi script and the basic fundamentals of Hindi grammar and composition covered in Hindi for Hindi-Urdu Speakers I. Students will read, discuss, and write about short texts in Hindi; study finer points of formal Hindi grammar and work on developing a wider range of formal vocabulary. Prerequisite: Hindi for Hindi-Urdu Speakers I or the equivalent.
