Summer Session 1: May 27 - July 2, 2014


Elementary Japanese I

Course Dates:  May 27 – July 2, 2014
Course Meeting Location: Amherst College
Class Meeting Times:  Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 9:00 am – 12:15 pm
Credits: 4
Tuition: $1200
This course is designed for students who have never previously studied Japanese. The course will introduce the overall structure of Japanese, basic vocabulary, the two syllabaries of the phonetic system, and some characters (Kanji). The course will also introduce the notion of “cultural appropriateness for expressions,” and will provide practice and evaluations for all four necessary skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Elementary Japanese I - online VERSION

Instructor: Wako Tawa and staff
Course Dates:  May 27 – July 2, 2014
Course Meeting Location: online
Class Meeting Times:  Individual online sessions scheduled between 1:00-5:00 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons
Credits: 4
Tuition: $1200
This course is designed for students who have never previously studied Japanese. The course will introduce the overall structure of Japanese, basic vocabulary, the two syllabaries of the phonetic system, and some characters (Kanji). The online version of the course involves independent study, written homework assignments, plus three individual sessions per week for speaking practice and three individual sessions per week for "confirmation" of skills. Individual sessions will be conducted via Skype on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons.
