In addition to offering exciting and topical programming that brings together the community, the Center houses Research Associates from across the world who enhance the feminist commitments and intellectual vigor of the field.

Job Description:

The Director of the Five College Women’s Studies Research Center is responsible for overseeing the programs and outreach activities of the Center, including public events; hosting of visiting scholars; developing and supporting intellectual communities for faculty members and visitors in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS); and building, maintaining and strengthening contacts and coordination with the WGSS programs at the five campuses. The Director works collaboratively with advice from members of the Center’s Steering Committee. The Director supervises and directs the work of the Center’s Program Coordinator who is a full-time employee of the Five College Consortium, and they work together to manage the Center’s programs, events, budgets, and publicity. The Director acts as a liaison to Five Colleges, Inc., and to the Chairs of the WGSS departments at each of the five institutions. Working with the Executive Director of Five Colleges, Incorporated, the Director prepares proposals and applications for funding from foundations and corporations for the Center to support existing programs as well as new initiatives. The Director provides an annual report on the activities of the Center and a reflective self-assessment to be shared with the Center’s Steering Committee, the Five College Consortium’s Executive Director and the Five College Deans.

The Director is expected to devote to these administrative duties the time reassigned from teaching one course each semester. The Director is expected to spend a substantial amount of this reassigned time at the facilities of the Five College Women’s Studies Research Center located on the campus of Mount Holyoke College.

The Director is appointed and supervised by the Executive Director of Five Colleges, Incorporated on the advice and recommendation of the Five College Deans.

Required Qualifications:

  • Tenured (or holding an equivalently long-term¾ten-year¾appointment at Hampshire College) faculty member at one of the five campuses
  • Availability to serve for at least three full years (perhaps interrupted by a sabbatical), but able and willing to serve as director beginning July 1, 2020 until June 30, 2023
  • Scholarly expertise in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies
  • Commitment to fostering scholarship and collaboration

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous administrative experience
  • Previous fundraising experience
