To Have and To Hold: Courting Property in Marriage

On Friday, March 2 at 1:00pm at the FCWSRC at 83 College Street on the Mount Holyoke College campus in South Hadley, Abigail Dallmann, Five College Women's Studies Research Associate from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, will give a talk entitled “To Have and To Hold: Courting Property in Marriage.”

Dallmann traces the legal history of women’s property in marriage under the Anglo-American common law tradition as well as the French civil law traditions in the United States during the nineteenth century. She compares the legal discourse on wives and property with contemporaneous literary portrayals of marriage and property to consider the larger meanings and anxieties of property, ownership, and gender.
