The Diverse Teacher Workforce Coalition

Building Pathways for Diverse Paraprofessionals to Become Highly Qualified Teachers

The Diverse Teacher Workforce Coalition is a Partnership-led collaborative effort to identify barriers to classroom paraprofessionals becoming teachers. Comprised of 25 organizations including school districts, educator unions, teacher preparation programs, and workforce development groups representing Amherst, Northampton, Holyoke, and Springfield, the Coalition seeks to transform the teacher pipeline and create an educational workforce more representative of and responsive to students in the communities served by their schools. By bringing together diverse paraprofessionals already working in school systems and offering a “career pathways” approach to meeting their needs, the Coalition will forge a model to change how new highly qualified teachers are developed. Increasing the diversity of teachers working in our schools in turn strengthens educational access, opportunities, and outcomes for black, Latino, and other students of diverse backgrounds throughout our region.
