This course aims to teach scientific and medical terms from a linguistic approach and within their historical context. Students will not be only memorizing word roots but will be learning many of the mythological and historical stories behind those word roots as well as their place within the history of medicine. Thus, the course requires a significant number of reading assignments and several writing assignments for which students will be expected to apply what they have learned to topics not already discussed in class. Students will learn some of the basic developments in the history of medicine and about major figures of importance from ancient Western medicine. (Gen. Ed. HS)
