This course is designed to introduce to undergraduate students the government and politics of two major East Asian states, China and Japan. We will examine the historical and institutional settings of these two governments, survey the changes that have taken place in the Chinese and Japanese societies, and discuss the relationship between political organization and economic performance in both countries. A major task of the course is to convey a concrete appreciation of these two distinctive political systems and to provide students with the necessary analytical tools and perspectives for understanding contemporary East Asian politics.

Open to Senior, Junior and Sophomore POLISCI majors & minors. POLISCI 101 or 111
